The brief

The existing lawn was past saving, thin, patchy and uneven, with more moss and bare ground than grass, and a surface that held puddles after rain. The owners had been through the familiar cycle of overseeding, feeding and hoping, and each spring delivered the same disappointing result, because the problem was never really the grass: it was the tired, compacted ground beneath it. Rather than another season of patching, they wanted it done properly, the old lawn out, the ground itself fixed, and fresh turf laid for an immediate, healthy result.

How we approached it

A lawn is only ever as good as the ground it grows in, so the honest version of this job is mostly groundwork with some grass on top. Simply laying new turf over the old problems would have produced a lawn that looked wonderful for a month and then inherited every fault of its predecessor. The old lawn came out completely, the compaction beneath it was broken up, the levels were corrected so water stops gathering, and the soil was improved so the new roots had something worth growing into.
